STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK---The St. Francis College women's bowling team (32-14) hosted the third annual Terrier New Year Knockdown at Rab's Country Lanes on Staten Island over the weekend. The two-day tournament featured five traditional five-player team matches on Saturday, and five Baker format matches on Sunday; the first two matches being quad Bakers for pin fall, followed by three NCAA-style best-of-seven matches in the round-robin playoff format.
St. Francis concluded the first seven rounds in fifth place in the standings, sending them to the Consolation Pool, which they won by capturing two-of-three round-robin matches. In the playoff round, the Terriers bounced back from a loss to Hampton University by sweeping Saint Peter's College and dropping Kutztown University in six games.
Saturday's action began against the 19th-ranked Norfolk State University Spartans, and after trailing midway through the match, the Terriers finished strongly to post a 909-835 victory. Freshman Kristina Terpo rolled a Terrier-high game of 232, sophomore Jennifer Vreeland scored 211, and senior Alexandra Stein contributed with a 199. Following that win, St. Francis took to the lanes against their cross-Hudson rivals, the Saint Peter's College Peahens. In the closest five-player match of the weekend, the Terriers pulled out a 836-835 verdict, paced by a pair of freshmen as Alyson Piergiovanni tallied a 181 and Kaitlin Caspar added a 180.
St. Francis then suffered its first loss of the weekend, 911-827 against the 11th-ranked Adelphi University Panthers. Piergiovanni rolled her second consecutive 181 to lead the Terriers once again. The Terriers' best match score of the day came in the next contest against the Hampton University Pirates, as St. Francis posted an easy 992-797 win. Piergiovanni led the Terriers for the third straight game with a 223 and Stein added a 208, while all five bowlers broke the 180 mark.
In the day's final match against the eighth-ranked New Jersey City University Gothic Knights, the Terriers dropped a 932-873 decision despite a 191 from junior Julia Petosa and the consistent Piergiovanni's third 181 of the day.
Sunday's action began with the conclusion of the full round-robin in a pair of quad Baker matches. The first match for the Terriers was against the fifth-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson University Knights. Fairleigh Dickinson broke the 200 barrier in the first two games and went on to an 806-680 win over the Terriers.
The final quad baker was against the ninth-ranked Kutztown University Golden Bears. Kutztown build an insurmountable lead in the first three games and despite a 187-148 win by St. Francis in game four, the Golden Bears came away with a 722-686 win.
The Terriers' seven-match pin fall total of 5,803 placed them fifth and they entered the Consolation Pool as the group's top seed for a trio of best-of-seven Baker matches. In the first match against Hampton, the teams split the first four games before Hampton won the fifth game by three pins and closed out the match with a 169-145 verdict.
St. Francis bounced back with a four-game sweep of Saint Peter's. After a 184-178 win in the opener, the Terriers rolled to convincing wins in the last three games, including a 202-138 win in game three for their best Baker game of the playoff round. The final playoff round match was against Kutztown, where the Terriers were victorious in three of the first four games. After Kutztown rolled a 220 in game five to extend the match, St. Francis finished their day with a 176-149 win in game six.
