The 10th-ranked St. Francis College women's bowling team (34-16) sits in fourth place of 19 teams after one day of action at the Bowie State University Bulldog Classic, being contested at the AMF Laurel Lanes in Laurel, Maryland. The Terriers bowled five traditional five-player games and posted a 2-2 record with one game being bowled against the "Blind" due to the odd number of teams at the tournament; the score against the Blind counts in the total pinfall standings but does not count in the win-loss record. The Terriers knocked down a total of 4,675 pins. Play continues on Sunday with five quad Baker matches, and final tournament standings will be determined by 10-match total pinfall with no playoff round.
St. Francis began the tournament with a 907-731 win over Penn State University-Altoona. Freshman Kristina Terpo set the stage for an outstanding individual day by rolling a 226 , while senior Alexandra Stein added a 199 for the Terriers in a relatively easy opening round win.
The Terriers then bowed to a hot Saint Peter's College team, 982-898 in the second match. Terpo again led the way with a 204, while Stein fired a 192, sophomore Jen Vreeland posted a 190 and sophomore Marissa Padovano scored a 187.
In the third match, the Terriers came up on the short end against the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, with the final score 992-927 in favor of the Hawks. Padovano led the Terriers with a 208, while Terpo again eclipsed the 200 mark with a 207 game.
The fourth match against the Blind saw the Terriers roll a 1,014 game. Junior Julia Petosa (223), Terpo (213), and Padovano (211) all broke the 200 mark, while freshman Alyson Piergiovanni just missed with a 195. While the game did nothing for the team's win/loss record, it served to vault them in the pinfall standings.
St. Francis closed out the day with a tight win against Norfolk State University, 929-880. Piergiovanni showed the way with a 222, and Terpo just missed becoming the first Terrier this season to sweep a five-game day over 200 as she rolled a 198.
Terpo's 209.6 average was third-highest of all bowlers who competed in all five games on the day.
