BOX SCORE

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK---
The St. Francis College women’s basketball team was defeated by local rival Long Island University, 67-57, on Sunday afternoon at the Wellness Center. The Blackbirds won the season-series from the Terriers and improved their record to 8-4 in the Northeast Conference and 14-9 overall. St. Francis fell to 1-22 overall and 0-12 in conference play.

The Blackbirds jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the early stages of the contest. The Terriers found a way to break down the Blackbird defense en route to tying the contest at 18 when freshman Autumn Lau (Mt. Wolf, PA, Northeastern) drained a three-pointer from the corner. Long Island’s Kiara Evans connected on a pair of free throws to help Long Island score six straight buckets, leading to a 24-18 advantage in favor of the home team with 10:58 to go in the first half.

Junior guard Shannon Gantt (Woodbury, NJ, Woodbury) drove down the lane and connected on a layup, before Evans answered with two more free throws. After junior guard Tiara Dunson (Tracy, CA, Merced College) converted 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to pull the Terriers within five, with nine minutes left in the half, the Blackbirds defense held the Terriers without a field goal for over eight minutes to take a 36-25 lead into halftime.

The Terriers were able to chip into the LIU lead to within seven as freshman Kim Snauwaert (Hooguede, Belgium, Keein Seminarie Roeselare ) nailed a three-pointer, but Long Island regrouped and extended their lead to as many as 20 points with solid fundamental defense.   St. Francis again clawed their way back to within 10 points, but Long Island played keep-away to escape with the season sweep of the Terriers.

Three Terriers finished the contest in double-figures, sparked by freshman Amber Lau (Mt. Wolf, PA, Northeastern)’s team high 12 points, on 4-of-6 shooting while pulling down six rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench. Freshman guard Stefanie Bingham (Willingboro, NJ, Willingoboro) contributed 11 points while tying her career high in rebounds with seven and dishing out a season-high four assists.   Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year candidate Autumn Lau finished the game with 10 points and two blocks.

Four Blackbirds scored in double-figures with Kiara Evans paving the way, falling one assist shy of her third triple-double, as she finished the contest with a game-high 18 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in 29 minutes of play. Heidi Mothershead and Tamika Guz each added 14 points while Connie James netted ten points and seven rebounds.

The Terriers will travel to Connecticut this week, as they first square off against the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Thursday, February 12th. Tip-off is slated for 5:00 pm.
