Terrier Q&A with Track & Field student-athlete Dominique Burrus (by Liliana Rodriguez, SFC Sports Information Office)
1) How has your first year and a half competing for St. Francis been?
a. It’s been fun. I have learned a great deal about my sport and I’m enjoying the experience.
2) Explain how you felt after winning your first NEC Indoor Long Jump Title.
a. I was very happy and excited that all of the hard work has finally paid off.
3) How do you feel about your experience at ECAC’s?
a. It was an eye-opening experience. It was the first time I went outside of my usual stage of competition, so it was interesting to see the track world outside of what I was accustomed to. On the whole, it was so much fun.
4) Long Jump, 60 Meter Hurdles or Relays. Which do you prefer?
a. How could I choose? I love them all.
5) Describe Coach Brown in 15 words or less.
a. It’s so hard. If you know Coach Brown, you know that 15 words is not enough.
6) What’s the best piece of advice ever given to you & who did you get it from?
a. When things got complicated my grandmother would always tell me to follow the Serenity Prayer- “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change. Courage to change the things I can. And wisdom to know the difference.”
7) What are you majoring in and what do you hope to do with that degree?
a. Business Management. I’m not exactly sure where I want to go with that degree, but I’ve always had a sense for business. I want to do what everyone else wants to do. Make money!
8) How did you get into Track & Field? Did you compete in any other sports?
a. I started walking when I was 7 months, so as you could tell, I’ve always been active. I started running track when I was 5. One of my neighbors was on a track team and one day I just tagged along with her and it stuck. Also, when I was younger I was a tomboy; so I played everything from football to basketball.
9) Describe your pre-jump/race ritual.
a. It’s crazy, I really don’t have one. I like to think if things are going to happen they’re going to happen. In my opinion it’s too late to change anything now, so I haven’t tried to acquire any ritual.
10) Do you have a role model?
a. My brother, Josh. He has a great work ethic, and is the best motivational speaker I know.
11) What do you hope to accomplish by the end of your 4 years at SFC?
a. My academic degree obviously. And I hope to leave a lasting impression on the SFC Track & Field team.
12) If you could choose anyone, who would your three dinner guests be? God and that it.
