BRONX, NEW YORK---The St. Francis College men’s tennis traveled to the Bronx to square off against the Fordham University Rams, in their final contest before the Northeast Conference Tournament kicks off on April 16th. The Terriers dropped a heartbreaker falling 4-3 to the Rams at the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts.
The Terriers opened up the match by taking the doubles point by winning two of the three doubles matches. The sophomore duo of Danlahdi Robinson and James Brennan Tsang defeated the tandem of Andriy Kulak and Jordan Brown, 8-6 in at first doubles while freshman Martin Grunin and Daniel Gonzalez coasted to an 8-2 victory over Kevin Sullivan and Kei Usami in third doubles. Rob Evans and Ben Kelly won at second doubles for Fordham over Alex Tokarz and Edward Alontaga 8-5.
In singles action, the Terriers were victorious in Singles 1 and 2 with Robinson and Brennan Tsang picking up victories for St. Francis. The Rams won at third through sixth singles in straight sets. Alontaga fell to John Thornhill at third singles (6-4 and 6-3), Austin Shoup bested Gonzalez at the fourth position (6-3; 6-3), Alex DeRienzo was triumphant at fifth singles over Grunin (6-3; 6-2) and Ken Fukumoto was successful in the sixth spot as he defeated Tokarz (6-0; 6-2).
The Terriers will next be in action at the Northeast Conference Tournament, held at the Mercer County Tennis Courts in West Windsor, New Jersey on Friday, April 16th. St. Francis is the seventh seed and will take on the # 2 seeded Fairleigh Dickinson at 11:30 am.
